Thomas came into my office this morning with a cheerful “Congratulations!” I love the Norwegian tradition of congratulating each other on the eighth of March.
It’s only just over a hundred years since the first women were allowed to vote. Spend a few minutes today thinking of our mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers and great great grandmothers who fought so hard for suffrage, equal pay and equal rights. Women are still paid less than men, and if you’re born a woman, you’re a lot less likely than your brother to have influence in politics or industry, but at least we’re theoretically equal now. In theory, we can do anything.
Enjoy your day. Read about the history of the International Women’s Day. And if you’re in Poland, enjoy your flowers!

Women has had the right to vote only since 1913 in Norway, so it hasn’t gone 100 years since that.
Congratulations

True. I was thinking of the first countries in the world to give women the vote. According to this, New Zealand women were the first to get the vote, in 1893. Women in some states of Australia got the vote in 1901, and in all of Australia in 1902. Finnish women got the vote in 1906, and Norwegian women followed close.
Apparently women in New Jersey had the right to vote between 1776 and 1807. Imagine that right being taken away!
Women in Kuwait still don’t have the right to vote or to stand for election.
Mind you, those dates might be all wrong. This site, which is part of the ABC’s site (The Australian Broadcasting Cooperation), though far down the tree, has completely different dates for Australia. I don’t have access to a bona fide encyclopedia just now, only google, so who knows.
We must remember to celebrate the centenary of 1913!

Why does Pitcairn island never rate a mention? They had female suffrage well before New Zealand. They adopted it without any fuss or bother, and I guess the world didn’t even notice.
Jill
Did they? Cool!

Congratulations to all women out there! I have noticed that noone here in St Andrews say “Happy Women’s Day!” or something similar. Perhaps it is not a British thing to do. However, in Noway I have usually been congratulated (mostly
