[telenor refuses to block the pirate bay]

Oh good on ya, Telenor: a big Norwegian ISP was asked by the IFPI (the recording industry) to block their subscribers from accessing The Pirate Bay - and Telenor refused to do so, giving lots of good arguments that are familiar from discussions about this kind of thing all over - but that sound oh so good when spoken by a major ISP:

asking an ISP to control and assess what Internet users can and cannot download is just as wrong as asking the post office to open and read letters and decide what should and should not be delivered (see English article or Norwegian one in Dagbladet)

They also said that the problem lay with the movie industry which has not moved their distribution system into the internet age - there’s plenty of ways to earn money from digital distribution, Telenor said, citing iTunes and games and ring tones for phones as examples, and it’s the movie industry’s own fault that their distribution system is antiquated.

Of course, now the IFPI are going to sue Telenor. Hopefully Norwegian law will find for Telenor and for net neutrality.

It is a great news indeed! Here in Poland we’ve recently had similar case of some major ISPs blocking their customers for alleged “piracy (however, not much public discussion on the subject followed). No details on this policy have been revealed so far and I’m wondering now whether the fact that one uses Pirate Bay is enough to get banned. Just recently my friend who tried to download some files lost her IP addresses, apparently it happened after she had gotten connected to Pirate Bay. Thanks for your blog,it is so inspiring, now I’m back to my lurking mode :-)
